“It could well be the case that 5G Fixed Wireless benefits NBN Co rather than destroying it as some have claimed,” Netcomm Wireless Els Baert has told the CommsDay Summit in Sydney.
Emphasizing that rather than try to gauge how much of a threat to NBN 5G will prove to be, “we should ask how much of an opportunity does 5G represent?”
“First of all, there will always be a need for a ubiquitous broadband network, something which has shown itself to be difficult to achieve. Secondly, looking at the current NBN Fixed Wireless network it is clear that 5G will be able to deliver an uplift in performance – although just how much of an uplift will depend on a range of variable factors,” said Baert.
She highlighted that NBN Co had deployed a huge amount of fibre right across the country and now had tens of thousands of powered nodes around the country as well. “These assets put NBN Co in a good position for 5G which will require more fibre and powered assets,” she said.
