EQUINIX INVESTS A$117M IN SECOND MELBOURNE DATA CENTRE

Equinix has announced it will invest an initial A$117 million to build a new international business exchange data centre in Melbourne’s Port Melbourne.

To be named ME2, the data centre will host a colocation space of more than 2,730 square
metres, enough for an initial capacity 1,000 cabinets, at the completion of phase one.
Eventually, when it’s fully built, the data centre will feature more than 8,190 square metres. ME2 will be located adjacent to ME1 with direct physical access between the buildings via a secure link bridge. It will also have direct access to the Australian Singapore Cable access point.

Jeremy Deutsch, Equinix Australia managing director, said ME2 will build on the company’s existing presence in Melbourne. “We started in Melbourne only four years ago with our green fields build of ME1. Fast forward to today we now have four sites with two distinct campus locations in Melbourne,” he said. “These sites house a combined ecosystem that provides the perfect building blocks to enable digital transformation.”

“The Melbourne metro continues to provide some of the most advanced
hybrid multi-cloud implementations,” Deutsch added. “Together with the upcoming ME2, we are creating a place where enterprises can interconnect and leverage our services.”

The announcement comes after earlier in the month the company announced it was growing its Sydney data centre network with an eighth location.

When the two new IBX data centres open in Sydney (SY5) and Melbourne (ME2) later this
year, Equinix will have a national footprint of 17 IBX data centres across Melbourne,
Sydney, Perth, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Samuel Lee, Equinix Asia-Pacific president, said the company’s expansion plans is indicative of the importance of the Australian market. “Australia is a key market in the Asia-Pacific region for Equinix, and we have been investing heavily to capitalize on the opportunities in the market as a result of digital transformation and increasing adoption of cloud services. We are thrilled to continue our growth in this region with ME2,” he said.
