Telstra expects Australian subs to make 40m calls on Christmas Day, send 91m texts on NYE

Australians are predicted to set a Christmas and New Year’s Eve record for data usage on Telstra’s mobile network this holiday season, driven by the increasing use of social video applications, rising demand for entertainment and growing access to high-speed 4G and 4GX technology.

Telstra predicts that  2,400 TB of data will be used on its mobile network, with 40 million calls being made from mobiles, and 45 million text messages to be make. Peak hour for sending SMS messages is expected to be between 10am–11am,” said the telco, noting that it also expects 4 million MMS messages to hit the network.

In addition, the company expects 650,000 text messages to be sent to loved ones overseas – more than double the number sent on a typical day.

New Year’s Eve

·         2,300 TB of data will be used on its mobile network

·         39 million calls from mobiles

·         Send 91 million messages; peak hour for sending SMS messages is expected to be between midnight and 1am

 “In the Sydney Harbour area, we expect over 16.2 terabytes of data traffic between 31/12 and 1/1,” said, Telstra Network Engineering Executive Channa Seneviratne. “In Melbourne alone, Telstra expects to see an increase in data traffic of approximately 40 per cent, (at 18.27 terabytes) from 31 December to 1 January.”
