Annual AFL, NRL finales see data usage hit combined 5.7TB

Crowds at the AFL and NRL Grand Final have generated a combined 5.7 Terabytes of data on Telstra’s mobile network, with more spectators sharing images and video on their social channels than ever before.

Spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground watching the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, generated 3.8 Terabytes of traffic on the Telstra Mobile Network, which is an increase of more than 22 per cent compared to last year’s AFL Grand Final. That’s the equivalent of more than 1,200 hours of high definition video streaming.

  • It all started before the first bounce with 1,952 Gigabytes of data generated on Telstra’s Mobile Network between 8:00am AEST and 2.30pm AEST, with fans lapping up the pre-game entertainment.
  • During the half-time break, a further 256 Gigabytes of data was generated by fans dissecting the action from the first half of the game.
  • As the final siren sounded, 561 Gigabytes of data was generated by the fans who stayed to see the West Coast Eagles celebrate with the Premiership Cup.
  • Apart from the Telstra mobile traffic at the MCG, it seems the Grand Final was the reason for an increase in the amount of text messages sent across Telstra’s entire mobile network on Saturday afternoon. Between 2pm AEST and 6pm AEST, around 7% more text messages and 9% more MMS were sent across Telstra’s Mobile Network, compared to the same time the week before.

At the NRL Grand Final at the ANZ Stadium on Sunday evening, attendees generated 1.9 Terabytes of traffic on the Telstra Mobile Network, which is an increase of around 19 per cent compared to last year’s NRL Grand Final. That’s the equivalent of more than 600 hours of high definition video streaming.

  • Prior to kick-off between 3pm AEST and 7.30pm AEST, 890 Gigabytes of data was generated on Telstra’s Mobile Network by attendees.
  • At half-time, a further 150 Gigabytes of data was generated by fans reviewing the action from the first 40 minutes of the game.
  • Once the final siren sounded, 175 Gigabytes of data was generated by the fans who stayed to see Sydney Roosters celebrate with the Premiership trophy.
  • Apart from the Telstra mobile traffic at ANZ Stadium, it seems the Grand Final was the reason for an increase in the amount of text messages sent across Telstra’s entire mobile network on Sunday night. Between 5pm AEST and 10pm AEST, around 7% more text messages and 8% more MMS were sent across Telstra’s Mobile Network, compared to the same time the week before.
