Ericsson, Telstra and Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, have flagged the successful completion of a 2Gbps capable LTE data call using Telstra’s live commercial network in the regional town of Toowoomba in Queensland Australia.
“This world first 2Gbps capable LTE data call using Telstra’s mobile network follows the record-breaking demonstration at Mobile World Congress in February 2018 and shows the possibilities of aggregating five LTE carriers across three different frequency bands with each carrier using 4×4 MIMO and 256 QAM technologies,” said Telstra.
The live LTE data call was achieved using Qualcomm Technologies’ mobile test device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X24 LTE modem, and an Ericsson Radio System solution running all five carriers from one Baseband 6630.
“Success in 5G will depend on strong underlying 4G technology, and this world first call over Telstra’s commercial network is an important step forward in the development of 5G,” said Telstra executive director of Network and Infrastructure Engineering Cheanna Seneviratne.
“We now have the commercial end-to-end network capability to deliver such world-leading LTE speeds and will now begin to deploy this technology in our mobile network to support even greater capacity and faster mobile speeds for our customers where it is needed most,” said Seneviratne.
Telstra customers will be able to snap up 2Gbps LTE technology enabled devices in early 2019 with the 2 Gigabit-enabled network to be deployed later in 2018.
