Equinix beefs up Perth PE2 facility to meet strong demand for digital interconnection capacity

Equinix is set to expand its International Business Exchange PE2 data centre in Perth, in a bid to meet strong demand from a clutch of domestic and international customers for a digital interconnection hub on Australia’s West Coast of Australia, including cloud and network service providers, mining, oil and gas industries, and the public sector.

”The rollout of Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric will drive further growth in cloud connectivity while access to subsea cables into Perth will meet increasing demand from network service providers wanting to connect their global network.,” said Equinix Australia MD Jeremy Deutsch.

“As we celebrate our 20th year, our business in Australia continues to grow as enterprises need interconnection and colocation to enable digital business and bring new services closest to the users at the digital edge.”

Equinix said the establishment of a primary interconnection site in Perth will form a hub offering enterprises and network service providers access to service providers locally via Platform Equinix and internationally via access to subsea cables such as the new Australia Singapore Cable (ASC) linking up Australia and Singapore.

The firm said IDC predicts that at least 60% of Australia’s GDP will be digitised by 2021, with half of the top 500 companies in Australia seeing the majority of their businesses depend on their ability to create digitally enhanced products, services and experiences by 2020.

“The expansion of PE2 will provide Equinix customers the ability to deploy infrastructure, applications and services closer to the digital edge as digital business continues to accelerate,” it added. “Two organisations set to benefit from the expanded PE2 facilities include one of the world’s largest internet service providers, Cogent Communications, and Australian mobile satellite solutions provider, Pivotel, which provides mobile network services to remote locations for customers, especially from the local agriculture and mining industries.”

Key Facts:

· The US$11 million investment in this phase two expansion of PE2, will add 225 cabinets and an estimated colocation space of more than 550 square metres (approximately 5,900 square feet) to the facility. Upon completion, which is scheduled for Q1 2019, PE2 will have a total capacity of 700 cabinets and an estimated colocation space of 1,720 square metres (approximately 18,500 square feet).

· Equinix PE2, situated 22 kilometres from Perth Airport, enables Equinix customers located on the West Coast to establish secure, affordable, high-performance and lower latency connections with a diverse ecosystem of enterprises, cloud service providers and users across the global platform.

· Home to some of the key organisations in Australia’s mining, oil and gas industries, Perth-based customers will benefit from the high-performing PE2 facility that is rolling out Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric™ (ECX Fabric™) this quarter to provide inter-metro connectivity with cloud and network ecosystems across the Asia-Pacific region, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, and more.

· The ASC will terminate in PE2, providing Equinix customers with the ability to interconnect their IT infrastructure and use high performance applications when doing business with Southeast Asia and other parts of the world.

· Digital business is reshaping network service providers’ sources of growth and forcing changes to their platforms. This is creating the need to support new application networking models and transforms the role the network plays and how services are delivered to support digital business. With more customers wanting to connect to their global networks, network service providers like Cogent Communications are looking to use PE2 and the Equinix global platform for connectivity and to meet growth in data consumption and bandwidth.

· The Global Interconnection Index, published by Equinix, predicts Interconnection Bandwidth will grow fourfold across the Asia-Pacific region by 2020. IDC also forecasts that by 2021, 85% of Australian organisations will use flexible IT environments with hyper-agile architecture for application development[2]. Equinix continues to expand the data centres acquired from Metronode to meet the rising demand for interconnection services from businesses located in Australia to keep pace with the growing digital economy.

· The A$1.035 billion acquisition of Metronode made Equinix the market leader in Australia. Equinix now has a total footprint of 15 data centres in Australia, including two facilities in Perth, and data centres in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane, strengthening its leadership position in the region[3].

· In 2018, Equinix reached a significant milestone, celebrating 20 years of being in business. The total global footprint of Equinix covers 200 IBX data centres across 52 markets, providing data centre and interconnection services for more than 9,800 of the world’s leading businesses. Among them, 40 IBX data centres are located in the Asia-Pacific region.
