Twilio targets enterprise with new programmable wireless offering

San Francisco based cloud communications specialist Twilio has flagged the general availability of its Programmable Wireless offering, aimed at providing Internet of Things connectivity that scales to the enterprise, and serves developers all over the world.

Twilio’s Programmable Wireless, a mobile comms platform that uses simple APIs to drive a broad range of internet-connected services, will allow developers to direct their time and efforts into creating innovative connected services.

“Despite the hype surrounding the IoT over the last several years, [it] has been largely out of reach to developers because there has not been a developer-friendly connectivity provider,” said Chetan Chaudhary, general manager of IoT at Twilio. “Twilio Programmable Wireless makes connectivity accessible to millions of developers via Twilio’s platform, empowering them to begin experimenting with IoT. We can’t wait to see what they build.”

More specifically, Twilio said Programmable Wireless enabled developers to:

  • Get to market faster with straightforward pay-as-you-go pricing in 120+ countries, free support, and the freedom to scale up or down with no upfront costs or contracts.

  • See where and when SIMs are connected and monitor data consumption in real time with individual SIM reporting.

  • Minimise data costs by leveraging Twilio’s Commands API to send and receive machine to machine (M2M)  Commands using the SMS transport protocol.

  • Use the same experience for IoT connectivity that they already use to power voice, SMS, video, chat and 2FA in their applications.

  • Rely on the only platform that provides a 99.95% uptime service level agreement made possible with automated failover and zero-maintenance windows.
