Melita picks Ericsson to modernize its network for 5G

Ericsson has won a strategic contract with Maltese telco Melita to upgrade its network for 5G, under which Ericsson will supply its Ericsson Radio System (ERS), and expand the virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) framework.

The announcement comes nearly a decade after Ericsson helped Melita launch a 3G network, making it the first provider in the world to integrate High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) mobile broadband into its cable TV network.

“We are committed to providing the residents and businesses of Malta with the best possible mobile connectivity. Our strategic goal is to stay at the forefront of customer experience, and Ericsson is the best-suited partner to address these requirements,” said Melita CTO Simon Montanaro.

Ericsson said the ERS system had been created to provide the infrastructure needed to support growing global demand for high-bandwidth connections, and to support the real-time, high-reliability communication requirements of mission-critical applications,

The vEPC offering, meanwhile, is billed as a complete end-to-end service which aims to improve deployment flexibility and allows multiple logical networks to be created on top of a common shared physical infrastructure using network function virtualisation.
