Telstra has launched Netgear’s Arlo Go LTE camera locally, offering what it claims is one of the first monitoring cameras that can be used on a mobile network and operate completely wire-free.
The mobile IoT smart monitoring device, which features HD video and night vision and includes a built in speaker and microphone, will connect to Telstra’s 3G and 4G mobile network.
While Netgear is perhaps best known for its modems and routers, the company has been increasingly pushing into the Iinternt of ThigbnosT market with smart home offerings such as the Arlo security range. The LTE enabled Go is the first mobile IoT device for Arlo and is dust and water resistant to IP65 ratings enabling it to be used outdoors.
Jeremy Howe, Telstra director of product innovation, said “Our customers have told us they are looking for a high-quality and flexible solution to monitor the things that matter to them including their homes, office, assets and pets.”
Telstra is targeting the offering at the home and small business markets, and cited use examples such as monitoring retail businesses and warehouses, keeping an eye on materials at building and construction sites and landscaping sites, where the devices can be installed temporarily as required, or at properties which are for sale or on short term rent.,
The telco does however note, in its fine print, that customers are responsible for complying with applicable laws including privacy or surveillance related laws.
The Arlo Go records video to the cloud whenever motion or activity is detected, providing ‘near real-time notifications’ when the camera is activated. A built-in micro SD card is also available for local backup storage in the event of mobile network interruption.
Telstra will be offering the device through Telstra consumer and small business channel on a range of plans, with an Arlo Solar Panel also provided.
Pat Collins, senior vice president of Arlo products at Netgear, said NetGear is also launching its smart analytics platform to provide customers with near real-time intelligence about what is happening when an event is detected on any Arlo camera.
“With the option to operate wire-free and now with the ability to easily connect where there is mobile network coverage, Arlo Go LTE Camera provides businesses and consumers with an ability to monitor their properties and assets,” Collins said.
